Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped combs under eaves, patio covers, and playground equipment; yellowjackets nest in the ground and get aggressive in late summer. Steady traffic to one spot on the roofline means a nest.
Why they show up in the Central Valley
Valley springs give wasps an early start, and by August a nest begun in April can hold hundreds. Stucco eaves, patio corners, and irrigation valve boxes are their favorite real estate.
What you can do right now
Don't spray a nest at midday — wasps are home and defensive at dusk, absent and angry at noon. Better: knock down small starter nests in early spring before they grow, and keep trash cans sealed in late summer when yellowjackets forage.
